Important Notice Pertaining To The Sighting Of The Moon

The UUCSA National Hilaal Committee which comprises of members of the various mainstream Ulama organizations affiliated to UUCSA has after an extensive consultative process with senior muftis of our country resolved as follows:

  • In the event of sighting the moon, individuals are required to give testimony before an Imam or Aalim who is affiliated to one of the UUCSA members or is a duly appointed representative of UUCSA.
  • If the Imam or Aalim accepts the testimony, the Shahid (testator) is required to complete the prescribed Shahaadah Form which he shall forward to the regional Ulama body affiliated to UUCSA.
  • The regional affiliate will then forward supporting documentation to the UUCSA National Hilaal Committee which shall verify that the due process has been followed
  • Once members of the UUCSA National Hilaal Committee are satisfied with details of the sighting or non-sighting, a unified decision shall be taken by UUCSA regarding the commencement of the next Islamic month.

The UUCSA National Hilaal Committee reiterates that sighting of the moon will only be accepted if Shahaadah (testimony) is given directly to an Aalim or Imam who is affiliated to one of the UUCSA members or is a duly appointed representative of UUCSA.

We all do better when we work together. Your cooperation will contribute to a unified Islamic calendar for Muslims in South Africa.
